They're Repeating in America What They Executed with Christianity

Trumpism's most revealing and defining instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to erect it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to present the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you should give him your sweater too.

The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a kind of radical love centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best of Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided great solace to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?

America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be distinctive and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it means both modesty and faith, a mixture that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
